JPG to Text.

JPG (and JPEG, the same format) is the most common photo format on the web, which makes it the most common source for text extraction: phone photos of documents, scanned pages, receipts, and whiteboards.

This JPG to text converter reads your JPEG entirely on-device. Drop the file below. No upload, no sign-up, no waiting on a server.

How to convert in seconds.

  1. Add your file with drag & drop, the file picker, or Ctrl + V paste.
  2. Choose the OCR language that matches your image.
  3. Press Extract text. Recognition runs locally in your browser.
  4. Edit the result, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.

About the JPEG format.

JPEG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail to shrink file sizes. That is great for sharing photos but slightly hostile to OCR, because letter edges are exactly the kind of fine detail JPEG softens. In practice, high-quality JPEGs convert nearly as well as PNGs. Problems only appear with low-quality saves, repeated re-compression, or tiny text. Cropping tightly to the text with the built-in Crop tool usually helps more than any filter.

Tips for the best result.

  • Re-save heavily compressed JPEGs at maximum quality before converting.
  • Photograph documents straight-on. Perspective skew confuses OCR.
  • Use even lighting; shadows across the page cause errors.
  • For screenshots, save as PNG instead. See our PNG to Text page.

Frequently asked questions.

How do I convert JPG to text?

Drop your JPG into the tool above and press Extract text. The text appears in an editable box. Copy it or download it as .txt. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Will JPG compression hurt accuracy?

Heavy JPEG compression blurs letter edges, which can cause mistakes, especially at low quality settings. If accuracy matters, export or re-save at the highest quality available, and prefer PNG screenshots for on-screen text.

Can I convert a JPG photo of a document?

Yes. Take the photo straight-on in good light, keep the page flat, and fill the frame with the document. The tool downscales very large photos automatically so OCR stays fast.

Is my JPG uploaded to a server?

No. Your JPG is decoded and recognized entirely on your device. It never leaves your browser. See our privacy page for details.
